the big one
Specific Pacific Northwest thing, everyone here talks about “the big one” a large scale seismic event due to happen along the fault we share with California. While California has had many earthquakes big and small, apparently we’re long due.
That’s how I feel sometimes. Like I’m long overdue for once big panic induced manic episode that’s going to ruin everything I’ve built up and friendships I’ve made.
It’s a gambler’s fallacy that in a pure random setting, if one outcome hasn’t been picked in a long time we like to assume it’s somehow due or coming up. If a coin flip lands on heads four times in a row we think tails is more likely next. But in a true random individual dice roll, there is no such thing, a careful look at the evidence could even point to it being weighted and not likely to happen at all.
