i think the fundamental underappreciation that the whole POINT of live theater is CHANGE and EVOLUTION causes so much of the community's issues.
i think the average person is not told this when learning theater, and it leads them to see it as a stuffy old form where everyone is obsessed with the great classics performed exactly as they would have been. it makes them not see a place for themselves or how they can benefit from it.
from a political standpoint those who want to restrict progressive and barrier-breaking art cannot stop theater the way they can censor published work. its so much harder to catch.
and from within the community, the arguments over what is tradition, the obsession with certain actors or choreo or design prevents progress. it prevents the bold new shows from really finding their footing. i am bitching about this because i watched someone complain that licensed productions changed a character's costume design, quote "its not that hard to replicate?!" with no consideration to maybe replication was never the intent? and never the point of the medium?
